Events
The events listed here are those where V4F either runs, or has a substantial interest by virtue of being members of the Somerset Towns Forum (STF), Mendip Community Support (MCS), and the Mendip Strategic Partnership (MSP). Relevant Town Council meetings are important too, as the the Forme Community Plan’s objectives form a substantial basis for the Council’s own Strategic Plan.
The last STF network event was on 12 March 2013, at Axbridge, with a theme of making our town centres better places, and featuring a presentation from “Living Streets”. 31 Town Councillors, Local Authority Officers and community activists attended this event from 11 towns across Somerset. They learned about current good practice in making the centres of our communities more walking-friendly, and less dominated by vehicles and the associated Highway engineering. Places where people want to stay longer, and that improve the quality of life. More information can be seen on page 2 of the VSP web News Tab, see in our “Links”.
The next STF event is on 20th June, with the theme “Creative and cultural approaches to revitalising the High Street “, in association with Arts Council England, South Somerset District Council and Taunton Deane Borough Council. Details to be confirmed, but it will include examples of good practice from outside the county by successful Portas Pilot Town Teams and others. The seminar will focus on three themes; Animating Spaces (making places come alive using culture), Creative interventions in empty shops and Design in the Public Realm.
Mendip Community Support (MCS) held their last Mendip District Forum at Croscombe on 19th March. Presentations were given by the Lloyds TSB Foundation, the Big Lottery – Awards for All and Reaching Communities, and local funders (Somerset Community Foundation, The Clark Foundation, Aster Communities and Mendip District Council new Homes Bonus Fund).
The next MCS Frome Forum is on 3 Jul. This is an opportunity for MCS member organizations, and other charities and community organizations, active in the Frome area to meet to exchange updates on their activities, what they have to offer the community, and any needs they might have.
